Cardinals are cheap, Rams are wasteful, What’s a St. Louis GM to do???
All off season many St. Louis Cardinal fans have been bemoaning the lack of aggressive spending by the club in the free agent market place. I give them props for resigning Lohse, but for the most part, it’s been all quiet for fans of red bird nation after being promised an “aggressive off season.” (I bet Mo won’t use that language again). I’d like another big bat behind Pujols too, but Manny ain’t going to happen and Ankiel and Luddy aren’t exactly chopped liver. I also start to really like this lineup if Skip can stick at second. Funny how so many people are freaking out now that he proved human and made an error. It’s only a week in, give him some time folks.
Anyway, after listening to Joe Strauss talk on the ITD Morning After about the state of the Cards bullpen – specifically the left side – I think fans and media have a legitimate grip about not spending two to three million on one of the two premium lefty relievers on the market. Who wants to start the Beimel/Ohman petition? Not signing Manny is one thing, not finding two or three million for a key team need is another.
Now to the Rams. Bill Devaney has started off doing exactly what he’s said he would do in free agency with the O line, get big and nasty in the middle so they can pound Steven Jackson. The signing of Brown looked great and the Rams were coming out of the gate with a bang in free agency. So imagine my surprise when reading Bernie’s 5 Minutes for Blogging this weekend to hear that some fans were complaining that the Rams overpaid for Brown? Bernie wrote “It’s funny how Cardinals fans complain that the team doesn’t spend enough, and Rams fans complain that the Rams spend too much.”
I actually laughed out loud at this. St. Louis fans are becoming a tough crowd. Personally, I like what both clubs are doing and can’t wait to be excited about watching the Rams play on Sunday again – especially with the Bartell resigning and Butler recruiting. In the meantime, I’ll feel a whole lot better about the Cardinals and their management if class B free agent Joe Beimel becomes a spring like Lohse addition we saw last year. What do you think?
