Cardinals sign 3
The St. Louis Cardinals signed three players on Monday to provide depth in the organization. To help fill the void left with the departure of Gary Bennett the Cardinals signed former Red and Royal backstop, Jason LaRue. The Cardinals, also, signed Dewon Brazleton and John Wasdin, both pitchers, to Minor League deals. The Cardinals filled their backup catcher void with the signing of catcher Jason LaRue. The 33 year-old LaRue appeared in 66 games with the Royals in 2007, hitting just .148/.240/.272. Drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1995, LaRue owns a .233 career batting average with 88 home runs and 316 runs batted in over 781 career big league games.
The Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the 2001 draft selected Dewon Brazleton with the third overall pick. Rushed to the big leagues due to the Devil Rays lack of pitching, Brazelton never established himself and has recently bounced around organizations. In 2007, Brazelton pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Double A Altoona where he went 5-5 with a 3.53 ERA. He also pitched in four games for the Kansas City Royals’ Triple A Omaha where he went 0-4 with a 7.11 ERA. Brazelton will 28 during the season so he is still young and still has a good arm. He could be another one of Dave Duncan super reclamation projects.
The 35 year-old John Wasdin was recently with the Pirates Triple A Indianapolis. In seven games, Wasdin posted a 1-1 record with a 6.37 ERA. The former first round pick of the Oakland Athletics posted a 5.95 ERA in 12 relief appearances with the Pirates in 2007.
