A Home for the Hollidays

A Home for the Hollidays

The ownership has done their part to bolster the Cardinals with the signing of Matt Holliday, but is it a good deal? Some people will say that paying Holliday what he is worth is neither good nor bad (it’s just average), but is there a value in elite talent that is difficult to quantify?

Reality wake up call is rude truth of the matter

Reality wake up call is rude truth of the matter

April began with a troubled bull pen and a offensive display that was most impressive.  The starting pitching was good with a few exceptions and late April saw a very impressive stretch of baseball that had Cardinal fans thinking this team was going to leave the rest of the central in the dust.
Then the May [...]

St. Louis Cardinals Minor Matters

St. Louis Cardinals Minor Matters

St. Louis Cardinals Director of Minor League Operations, John Vuch, sent this along from day one of the teams’ minor league exhibition schedule. These are just the highlights with my commentary in parenthesis.
Memphis/Springfield
Pitchers
Blake Hawksworth 4 IP, 3 hits, 2 runs, 0 BB, 2 K’s (I would really love to see “Hawks put it [...]

Cardinals and Ankiel settle on contract

Cardinals and Ankiel settle on contract

The Cardinals avoid arbitration with Rick Ankiel today, agreeing on a 1 year $2,825,000 contract.  The settlement was completed just hours before an arbitration hearing that would have determined his contract.

Edmonds Traded

The Cardinals’ perennial Gold Glove outfielder Jim Edmonds has been traded to the San Diego Padres for Class A Third baseman, David Freese.  Along with Edmonds, the Cardinals will also send cash considerations according to the San Diego Union Tribune.

Cardinals sign 3

The St. Louis Cardinals signed three players on Monday to provide depth in the organization.  To help fill the void left with the departure of Gary Bennett the Cardinals signed former Red and Royal backstop, Jason LaRue.  The Cardinals, also, signed Dewon Brazleton and John Wasdin, both pitchers, to Minor League deals. The Cardinals filled their [...]

Mozeliak in as GM

According to Bernie, Cardinals’ interim GM John Mozeliak will have the interim tag removed.  I have to say I am disappointed.  Don’t get me wrong, Mo has been a good soldier and probably deserves a shot.  But I was hoping for a new direction, a new philosophy.  Time will tell if he is a clone of his [...]

Joe Mather to the 40 man roster

According to MLB.com, the St. Louis Cardinals have purchased the contract of Joe Mather.  The 25 year-old was the Cardinals third round selection (104 overall) in the 2001 amateur draft out of Mountain Pointe High School in Phoenix, Arizona.
The tall, lanky outfielder had struggled staying healthy and was an after thought as far as Cardinal [...]

It’s Official!

According to Bernie of the Post-Dispatch, La Russa is back:
DeWitt and La Russa have reached agreement on a 3-yr deal… 1 pm news conference today at Busch Stadium. No GM has been hired yet … Obviously, though, La Russa must have a pretty good idea of who it will be or he wouldn’t make the deal [...]

Joel Pineiro coming back

The Post Dispatch is reporting the Cardinals have signed Pineiro to a two year deal. Terms were not being reported. Pineiro made 11 starts for the Cardinals, going 6-4 with an ERA of 3.96.
Nice sign by the Cardinals.  Pineiro pitched well down the stretch and there really aren’t any better free agents out there.

Even more honors for Rasmus

Baseball America named Colby Rasmus as the Top Prospect in the Texas League.  Springfield made up an impressive 20% of the list.  Chris Perez was rated as the number 11 prospect and Jaime Garcia followed at number 12.  Bryan Anderson came in at low number 17 but it is hard debate being how many prospects [...]

Jocketty Out

In what has to be considered a bombshell, the Cardinals have fired Walt Jocketty according to Bernie.  Assistant general manager John Mozeliak has been named interim GM by Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt.  I would hope that this would seal the deal and LaRussa will not return.  More on the move later today.

Stealing Home

There has been some confusion about Mike McCoy’s stealing of home.  I dropped a line to Jim Misalik of the Memphis Commercial Appeal.  Thanks to Jim for the quick response:
Although it wasn’t planned, the Redbirds executed the first triple steal by a Memphis team since 1979 in the eighth inning Monday. The three-way theft accounted [...]

More call ups

In the latest round of callups, Brian Barden and Brian Falkenborg will be making their way to St. Louis.
Barden is an infielder that was picked up on waivers from the Arizona system.  He is a plus defender that I believe is the Cardinals best defensive option at third.
Falkenborg appeared in 6 games this season with [...]

Cards get Branyan

 Flickr
Cards trade for Russell Branyan, lately with the Phillies, for a PTBNL.  Though he provides tremendous power, he strikes out a lot and is a defensive liability.  To make room for Branyan, the Cardinals placed Scott Rolen on the DL.  Get the feeling this is the last time we see Rolen this year?
Branyan is a [...]

Lambert to Detroit

Much aligned former first round pick, Chris Lambert, was sent to Detroit to complete the Mike Maroth trade.  He will be assigned to Triple A Toledo.  Lambert can be described as a bust since joining the Cardinals organization in 2004 out of Boston College.
