Deep Thoughts About Week 1

OK, so not too deep just yet. Several things need to have some time to play out, including the Cardinals closer situation (and we aren’t the only team with problems in this department in the central…more on “Sweet Lou” in a bit).
Todd Wellemeyer: He was a little Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde this spring. Was he a one season wonder, I don’t think so. The stuff is there and then there’s Dave Duncan. I think he returns to form – something just needs to click.
Jason Motte: He’s the latest to get the Izzy treatment from the fans. He blows a save, boo if you must, but not before he comes into the damn game, like fans did last week. He’s a young pitcher and just needs to get the butterfly’s out of his stomach. Is his fastball too straight, does he need a better offspeed pitch? Perhaps, but looking at his stats in the minors, it’s there, he just needs some time to develop. Fans have been complaining about the lack of youth for years and now that it’s here, complain about the growing pains that accompany it. Stop BOOING the kid and let him do his thing. This just in – La Russa might know what he’s doing…
David Freese: Good glove and a bat, goes to all fields, reminds me of Rolen with the workman like attitude. He’s going to be a good player…let’s see where and if it’s with the Cardinals…
Chris Duncan: TWO HANDS. USE TWO HANDS. My only complaint about Dunc is that he does the one handed catch thing like the rest of the cool kids. Matter of fact, I hate it when anybody just uses one hand. Other than that, he’s a masher who offers average outfield D. I’m happy to see him back and off to a hot start so I don’t have to read/hear/listen to the “he’s Dave’s kid” crap. He belongs haters, deal with it.
Colby Rasmus: Speaking of too cool for school, wow, one laid back dude. He’s smooth in the OF and I love his batting eye. I didn’t quite get the high average projections for him based on his stats in the minors, but now I see it. The power and speed are there too, now I get why scouts love this kid. I just hope his laid back attitude doesn’t backfire on him in this town, but the haters will jump on it.
Rennys Reyes: Don’t hit the ball or I’ll cut you vato! I love this dude, he looks like he’d rather kick your ass than pitch to you, little Ray King but with more edge. Great signing here.
Joe Thurston: Aaron who? Slick fielder with a nice bat, give Mo credit for this one folks. Extend him now and let’s enjoy watching the guy who finally got his break.
These are just a few of my favorite thoughts after the first week. Carp is Carp again, Skip is doing just fine, La Russa might actually know what he’s doing and Albert is healthy and SMOKING the ball. Is this the year he hits .400 folks? This is going to be a good team and I can’t wait for the ride.
Speaking of closer issues – anyone watch the Cubs over the weekend and see Sweet Lou’s reaction to his bullpen walking guys? Holy crap I was laughing watching the replays on the MLB network of Lou yelling and waving at his pitching coach to go out and make the pitching change because he didn’t want to talk to the guys. The Cubs aren’t running away with anything folks…and oh yea, we’re in first…

Yeah, that Colby guy isn’t bad.
