April 09, 2009 | Dustin | Comments 0

St. Louis Cardinals Minor League pitcher Deryk Hooker was suspended for 50 games for violating the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.  The 19-year-old was scheduled to start the season at Class-A Quad Cities where he would have pitched in the team’s second game.

A seventh round pick in the 2007 MLB First Year Player Draft, the Cardinals reportedly gave Hooker an above slot bonus of $100,000.  During 2008, he reached the full season Midwest League after dominating at Rookie level Johnson City.  Between the two stops, Hooker posted an ERA of 2.77 with 73 strikeouts in 65 innings.

Hooker was rated as the number 27 prospect in the Cardinal organization by the Birdhouse.
