Rams end busy week with release of Holt, Pace

March 14, 2009 | Clark | Comments 0

Switching gears here folks.  I’d be remiss if I didn’t note the release of two great Rams this week, Torry Holt and Orlando Pace.  Two key weapons of the “Greatest Show on Turf,” it’s sad to see these great players leave town for nothing more than a goodbye and thank you.  It was tough enough seeing Ike in 49er red, one wonders where these two will end up.  Early rumors have Pace looking to reunite with Warner in Arizona, who knows with Holt ?  Ike in San Fran is one thing, Pace in Arizona?  Ouch.

I was listening to The Fast Lane on 101 ESPN the other day (if you haven’t given it a chance, check D’Marco, Randy and Bob out – I like Bernie – but these guys are great too) when D’Marco was talking about signing in San Francisco.  He cracked me up, talking about looking at the O line and thinking, “I hate these guys.”  He  went on  about his decision to retire and calling the head coach, telling him he was going to retire, he couldn’t do it.  I had a whole new level of respect for the man after I heard that.

Anyway, back to the boys, I guess it’s the baseball in me, but it’s hard to imagine letting players like that walk for nothing.  I keep trying to figure out what first round or supplemental picks we’ll get for these guys – then I realize it’s football – no such system.  And what does it say when two proven veterans are cut while rookies who haven’t played a down enter the league making millions.  I’d like to see some changes here – don’t get me started about taking care of the old school football players who put the league where it is today.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the direction the team is taking and these moves are what they must be, but damn it, wouldn’t it be nice to still see Big Game and the Big O in a Rams jersey?  Regardless, I wish them the best, until they line up on the other side of the ball.
