Mulder looks ready. Springfield forgets the bats. Ottavino struggles and Kozma is promoted.
According to the Chicago Sun Times, David Eckstein is ”becoming target No. 1 on the Sox’ offseason wish list. He would give them a leadoff hitter with a career .349 on-base percentage and a sure-handed shortstop. Plus, he and Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski worked together last offseason in a feud for TNA Wrestling. Team Eckstein won. ”
The Cubs picked up Steve Traschel from the Orioles. I really don’t see where he fits in as he is not any better than anyone in their starting rotation. Maybe it is just an extra arm for any makeups still on the schedule.
I can’t believe this happened 20 years ago. It makes me feel old.
Cardinals 5 Reds 8
Anthony Reyes was terrible. He gave up a leadoff HR to Josh Hamilton and then 2 more runs in the first. The leadoff man in the second hit an inside the park HR and then he walked the pitcher. In his defense, Chris Duncan totally misplayed the ball to start the second. If we see Reyes start again I believe it will be in an emergency start. No way LaRussa runs him out there again. To the Cards credit, they battled back. Rick Ankiel had a big night with a Grand Slam.

Memphis 4 Nashville (Brewers) 3
Mark Mulder gave up 2 runs on 5 hits in 5 innings. Mike Maroth got the win with 2.2 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits, 2 BBs, and 2 Ks. Chris Perez picked up his 8 Triple A save despite giving up a run. Nick Stavinoha had 2 hits and an RBI. No other Redbird had multiple hits.

Springfield 0 Wichita (Royals) 2
The mighty Springfield offense was held to only 4 hits and the defense made 2 errors. P.J. Walters was solid, allowing only 2 runs on 4 hits and striking out 6 in 7.1 innings. The Cardinals did not have an extra base hit. Colby went hitless for the second straight game.
With a win, the Cardinals would have clinched the Texas League North Division.
Palm Beach Post
Palm Beach 2 Brevard County (Brewers) 11
Adam Ottavino was cruising along having given up 2 runs with 6 Ks in 5 innings. Unfortunately, he went out for the sixth. After hitting the leadoff batter, Ottavino had hit 2 given up 2 hits and was charged with 4 runs while only recording 1 out. Julio Sanchez gave up 3 in 1.2 and Michael Cooper gave up 2 in an inning. Jim Rapoport had 2 hits and the number 2 hitter, Shane Robinson, had one hit. With Rapoport and Robinson at the top of the lineup, it might be the fastest one-two punch in the minors. Dan Nelson went 5-5 with an RBI. Seems to me that Ottavino might just be out of gas after a long season.

Quad Cities 5 Peoria (Cubs) 7
With a win the Swing would be in the playoff and had their ace, Tyler Herron, on the mound. Well, Herron has been better. Tyler gave up 5 runs on 7 hits in only 3 innings. Tony Cruz had 2 hits. Nick Derba walked 3 times and scored twice.
On a recent Midwest League roadtrip, John Sickels says that the Swing’s Steve Hill had the quickest bat that he saw.
Batavia 1 Jamestown (Marlins) 2
Justin Roberson had a hit and 2 BBs. Daniel Descalso and the newly promoted Pete Kozma each singled and that was all for the Muckdog offense. Jess Todd was dominate, pitching 3 perfect innings while striking out 4. Brian Broderic gave up 2 HRs in 3.2 innings but did strike out 6. Also of note, Marlins first round pick and the guy I hoped would slip to the Cardinals, Matt Dominguez, hit his first pro HR.
