Why Whiteyball?

Whiteyball is a style of baseball used to describe the style of play of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1980’s.  Manager Whitey Herzog styled his baseball teams based on five philosophies: stealing bases, bunting, hitting the ball the opposite way, utilizing the hit-and-run, and relying on fleet-footed defenders.  Busch Stadium fit this style perfectly, a large ballpark with ultra fast astroturf.

This is the baseball I grew up watching.  I went to my first baseball game on 9/6/1982 and got to see Darryl Porter score on a George Hendrick single in the bottom of the ninth for a 1-0 victory.

I had the opportunity to join the guys over at the Birdhouse at the end of the 2007.  Part of the Scout.com network and an affiliate of Fox Sports, it is one of the premier Cardinals’ sites on the web.  My work has been featured at Fox Sports, Baseball Digest, the 2008 Scout Prospect Guide, MLB Trade Rumors, Ballpark Digest, and the 2009 Maple Street Cardinals Annual.  Plus, my work has been referenced at STL Today, Ducksnorts, and a variety of other sites all over the web.  Also, I have been a guest on radio networks all over Cardinal Nation.

During the winter of 2007/2008, I was certified by the Baseball University scouting course.  Since then, I have scouted not only the minor leagues but college baseball as well.

Here at Whiteyball, we actually go to the games.  We don’t get all of our information from stat sheets and box scores.  If you want to get insight from people that have actually been to the games and have seen the prospects in person, this is your site.

In February of 2009, I was fortunate to add Matt Wilson, Michael Riehn, and web designer extraordinaire, Chris Clark, to the Whiteyball team.  Shortly there after, Paul Dobbins joined the mix.  I am really excited about what the four of them have to offer and I am sure you will enjoy them as well.

One last thing, this is Whiteyball: Baseball and a little more, so from time to time, we may cover a topic that has nothing to do with baseball.  But hey, it’s my site and I can do what I want.
